Chapter Six
Mary
I donât that the wherewithal to leave the parking lot of this wretched place. The humiliation is simply too great. I canât believe anyone would be so cruel as to suggest something so rude and crass, especially in a business situation. Though I never met that horrible Mr. Jepson, I spoke with him over the phone, and we exchanged emails. He seemed so nice. Boy, was I wrong!
And Ms. Herndon⦠well, she just seemed so professional. When will I ever learn to become a better judge of character?
I pick up the phone to call the one person I know who will always support me. But the call goes to voicemail, and, as badly as I hate it, I have no choice but to leave a message. âHey, Melea. Itâs me. Sorry to bother you when I know youâre getting ready for the Christmas concert with the kids tonight, but I just wanted to say hello. Well, that and to cry, at least virtually, on your shoulder. Itâs been a tough day, and itâs not even lunchtime. I really need a friendly voice right now. Call me back when you get this message. Love you!â
âHey⦠are you alright?â
I jump as I hang up the phone and turn to see my dream guy knocking at my car window. I take a deep breath and glance in the mirror to see how red my eyes are before rolling down the window. I look horrible, but thereâs not much I can do about it now. âHi again. Yes, Iâm fine, thank you. I didnât mean to cause a scene in there. I should probably go now.â
Before I can start the ignition, he leans down and looks at me, studying me carefully. His eyes are the color of the sky. My heart skips a beat, and the space between my legs tingles. I try to regain my composure before I pull him into the car with me and enjoy his body right here in the bank parking lot in front of God and everybody.
âIâm Joâ Joshua, by the way. I figured with as many times weâre run into each other, I should probably introduce myself.â He sticks his hand through the open window, and I shake it. I notice he hesitated when he said his name. Strange. Does he not want to tell me who he is? I suppose anyone who witnessed my blowup in the bank would be a little wary of me.
âMary,â I say. âLook, like I said, Iâm sorry for causing a scene back there, but I need to go. I need to get back to work.â
âSure. Yeah, I understand. So do I. But I saw you out here, and I knew it had been a few minutes since you left the bank. Plenty of time for you to have left. So, I was just making sure you were alright. You know. Not too upset that you couldnât drive.â
âThatâs very nice of you, Joshua, but itâs not necessary. Iâm fine. Thank you, but if youâll excuse me.
